My first and most favourite CD July 24, 2006

This recording was my first: it was so perfect that I had to buy more and hear more, so I owe a lot to this. I suppose I also owe a lot to the Honda advert that introduced me to it...
It is an astonishing text, and the variety of movements created by Pergolesi are beautifully crafted in performance here. Kirkby and Bowman, carefully supported by the Academy of Ancient Music, wring out the very emotional core of the music. The image of the Virgin at the bottom of the Cross could not be made more real, and the anguish, torment and pain born by the mother are truly brought to life.
Stop reading this and buy it.

The Pergolesi Stabat Mater is well known in the repertoire of baroque sacred music. However, this interesting version, using soprano and counter-tenor, without the more traditional choir,is exquisite, in the true sense. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Emma Kirkby is probably the foremost interpreter of early and baroque vocal music and the superlatives for her voice have been catalogued many times previously. But here, matched equally by the other-worldy tones of world-renowned counter-tenor, James Bowman, her purity, clarity, emotion and range are offered to us in all their matchless glory. Whether the listener acknowledges a spiritual life or faith, or not, this recording, surely, brings a glimpse of heaven to our mundane lives. The first minute or so of 'Quis est homo' is worth the price of the CD alone. This is a 'must-have' for anyone with a heartbeat and a soul.
