A celebration of the life and music of George Harrison, the Concert for George is a record of the November 2002 Royal Albert Hall tribute. Organised by close friend Eric Clapton, the show brought together the musical luminaries of George's generation, who not only inspired his music but were in turn inspired by him. Artists ranging from Joe Brown to Ravi Shankar perform touching but not overtly sentimental versions of his best-loved tunes. The many highlights include the Monty Python gang (joined by guest member Tom Hanks) performing "The Lumberjack Song", and a bare-arsed version (literally!) of "Sit On My Face". For the first time since the demise of the Beatles, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney share the same stage. Director David Leland does an excellent job of capturing the intimacy of the concert, as well as the emotions of those in attendance. Apart from the behind-the-scenes interview snippets included in the theatrical version, the cameras rarely move away from the main action on the stage. Shot in suitably restrained colours, the live performance footage makes for stimulating viewing, a particular highlight being Ravi and Anoushka Shankar's opening sitar recital. All in all it's a touching five-star tribute to one of the greatest musical icons of the 20th century. On the DVD: Concert for George two-disc set has two versions of the concert: the complete two-and-a-half-hour show and a shorter theatrical version that received a limited cinema release--this latter includes backstage footage of preparations for the concert, as well as interviews with some of the key performers from the night. Additional material is included on both discs: footage from the rehearsals, the Monty Python team backstage and interviews with many of the performers. Three versions of the concert soundtrack are also featured, ranging from ordinary stereo to an ear-shattering DTS version. --John Galilee

I'll See You In My Dreams September 22, 2008
I remember trying to get a ticket to the actual concert for George, and not being able to. I knew this would be a fitting and memorable event. The lineup included a lot of his friends and former colleagues, for example Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston, and Tom Petty. I assume the majority of people buying and watching this DVD are Beatles/George Harrison fans. I certainly fall into that category.
I was moved beyond words and description by this concert. There was an immeasurable outpouring of love, although not in a cringey, gushing way, just in a way that showed the reverence he was held in by those who knew him. Although there were international superstars, nobody tried to steal the show. They were all there to remember a dearly departed friend. This just made it even more touching to watch.
I find it even more poignant and heartbreaking to watch now, with Billy Preston having passed away, and as time goes on and more and more of these friends pass on, it will get more and more special and chilling (in a goosebump-inducing way).
I, of course, have favourite George songs, many of which were played here in this show. I will focus on performances; here are my favourites.

This is honestly the best concert I have ever seen, albeit vicariously through DVD; I can only imagine the atmosphere inside the Albert Hall that night. Even a good 5 years on, it still moves me to tears and is a DVD I watch regularly with no hint of boredom. The magic is still there.

A supreme act of love June 22, 2008
I was never a fanatic Beatles fan, and always thought that the solo work of the Beatles after their breakup was as good as or better than what they had produced together. Certainly this was true for John Lennon and George Harrison.
Still, I approached this 2002 tribute concert for George Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall with some trepidation, half-expecting to see a series of long-winded speeches and egotistical performances by some of the world's most famous musicians. How wrong I was!
This 'Concert for George' was, and is, a supreme act of love -- there is simply no other way to put it: love and respect for George and his music by his family, friends and peers, and love for George by the audience at the Albert Hall that evening.
Just as with George's original 'Concert for Bangladesh' back in 1971, the first half of this show was devoted to the music of India. This was a beautiful way to start the show. Ravi Shankar's Indian orchestral composition for George (composed as an improvisation during rehearsals!) was a sheer masterpiece, and when it was over, I could not help but stand up and applaud the conducting of the Indian and western orchestras by Ravi's daughter, Anoushka. Just stunning.
The concert then moved smoothly along from western artist to artist, song to song, with all the tunes you'd expect to see performed at such an event and much more. I personally think the concert could have gone on well without Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (wasn't Bob Dylan or Leon Russell available?), but that doesn't take away in the least from what was otherwise a powerful show. It *was* good to see there on stage Billy Preston, who got the first standing ovation of the evening with the magnificent 'Isn't It a Pity'.
It's clear that all on that stage loved being there on the first anniversary of George's passing and sharing this music with the people. Eric Clapton outdid himself as both musical director and performer of what he rightly calls on the second disc as George's 'spiritual love songs'.
The concert finale of 'I'll See You in My Dreams' with Joe Brown on ukulele, along with the entire set of performers and the falling flower petals and all, was truly a nice sendoff for George -- you could see the joy on all the performers' faces and feel it as if you were right there in the audience. In this digital age of me-first, me-only, it was touching and uplifting to witness a concert that was put together, performed and attended for nothing more than the love for a musician, George Harrison, whose work both during and after the Beatles has influenced generations of people in a positive way.
So I will add my 5 stars to the long list of those who have found this 'Concert for George' to be one of the best concerts they have ever seen on film. Aside from the spotty sound levels, the camera work and editing of the music and performances are brilliant. I look forward to watching 'Concert for George' over and over again in the years to come. Thank you, George Harrison, for all the love and inspiration.

This is the most incredible DVD and anyone who grew up in the sixties (like I did) will find it extremely moving. Although it is a concert for George Harrison after his death, as most people performing said, it felt as if he was there himself. His son Dhani looks exactly like him and appears to also have George's modest persona.
Altogether a wonderful, wonderful DVD and Joe Brown's final tribute "I'll see you in my dreams" moved me to tears-I defy anyone to listen to it with dry eyes.

Well what can I say, everyone before has said it all, brilliant performances by brilliant artists, performing brilliant songs from the late brilliant George Harrison may God rest his soul. Buy this and you will not complain.
