Music for distracted times January 30, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Alamire and their director David Skinner add to their impressive recordings with this collection of Thomas Tomkins's church and chamber music from the "distracted times" of the English Civil Wars. This time complemented by the Choir of Sidney Sussex Cambridge and the viols of Fretwork, Skinner has produced an audacious imagining of Tomkins's music: audacious in that some of the pieces are accompanied by viols and not the customary organ. But as soon as you hear the pieces performed you realise that Skinner is on to something. The litheness of the viols, entwining with Tomkins's plangent melodies conjures an atmosphere of an underground church, singing and worshipping in the words of the forbidden Church of England. Listen especially to "Hear My Prayer, O Lord" (track 3), with Rob Macdonald's magisterial opening solo.
This CD has deservedly earned an "Editor's Choice" accolade in Feb 2008's "Gramophone". Buy it and hear for yourself the reason why.
