Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
A wimpy remake of an already anaemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle Down to Earth), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly. Directed by Robert Greenwald, the film doesn't even work as decent kitsch. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

4 out of 5 stars SO 80's   June 26, 2008
OK, we can all agree that there's no relevant plot, the personages are almost nonexistent, but WHAT a visual and audio impact!
IF you look at it as an astray piece of style, it embraces all of the, then future, 80's trends and fashions. from ONJ rollerskating outfit with the flirty miniskirt and leg warmers [so funny in the cartoon section of the movie] up to the 'ALL OVER THE WORLD' scene in a LA store with so many 'fab' fashion disasters. BAD hairdos, neon glowing clothes, dreadful makeup, and a corny pop fashion flavour that makes it all SO unforgetable and unforgivable... I give it 4 stars, due to the cool music [even if the sonny malone personage was the WORST casting ever] and MARVELLOUS screaming bad glam outfits throughout! ;)

5 out of 5 stars Xanado ( A movie perfect for its time)   May 26, 2008
I dont understand why this movie got bad reviews, I think it is a wonderfull fantasy that removes you from the pain of the real world, ok the story is old, but it is done so well, with amazing stars (olivia and gene) anybody that slates this has no wonder in there soul anymore. its a movie that will find its place as a classic in due time. I mean its main soundtrack is from ELO and that makes it worth watching for that alone. a Very cool movie that has a endless quality.

3 out of 5 stars Not a flop anymore   May 25, 2008
Xanadu is now regarded not as a flop but as a phenomeanon.
Since it's disasterous release in 1980, Xanadu has actually surpassed a high percentage of mainstream movies. But, while the film flopped, the soundtrack that accompanied the movie, With a high calibre of artistes such as Olivia Newton-John, ELO, Cliff Richard and Gene Kelly, soared to the top of the charts upon release. While "Drumdreams" and "Fool country" do not appear on the album, there seem to be enough tracks that vary from the 1940's Andrews Sisters-esque big band sound to ELO's electro-pop. Although a slightly short album, you are sure to be kicking those shoes off and dancing around you handbag.
And now with the Broadway musical being such a success, has taken Xanadu to uber-cult status. So, Whatever your conclusion, Xanadu seems to be heading for world domination.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't deserve its soundtrack   January 29, 2008
This is a dreaful, dreadful film but strangely has a charm all of its own even if that charm is one of nostalgic bemusement. To see people rollerskating all over the place is odd throughout the film, the whole premise of ONJ's presence is bizarre in the first place, the dialogue could have been written by three monkeys with one typewriter and a spare ten minutes, and the characterisation is non existent. And the plot?
What on earh Gene Kelly is doing in this trainwreck is an enduring mystery, and why ONJ agreed to it after the success of Grease must have been a reflection on the pay cheque rather than having read the script (and I can't believe there are two people who took the credit for this monstrosity!) Even John Farrar, who added Hopelessly Devoted To You and You're The One That I Want to Grease can't summon up the same creative magic to offer a hit here.
The music is on another level though and the theme by ELO with ONJ is still as good as it ever was. But the five songs from ELO are too good for this nonsense. One reviewer commented on the four minutes of GK with ONJ that work, and I agree. Someone else must have filmed and planned that section, because the rest is so amateur in comparison.
This is good for late night viewing with friends who want something light, fluffy and laughable in the background. No wonder the 80s became such a fashion shocker of a decade with this to herald its start!

3 out of 5 stars There's something fascinating about this...   August 23, 2007

... and I think it's the feeling of fearless attempt by everyone involved to actually do something brave and different. To think that this was designed to be a blockbuster, that says something about the willing to try new stuff that was prevalent in the 80s. Today, the Hollywood machine just keeps playing safe, ruminating on old franchises... Xanadu is a bad movie, but like Ed Wood's films you can't blame them for not trying to do something risky. The idea of fusion late disco with old school musical with fantasy with comedy with drama with animation... Well, Xanadu is a mess, a gloriously messy turkey that ends up touching you with the madness of it all. Yes, sometimes it's very corny, most of time it seems one of those children's learning games where someone is desperately trying to fit the cube piece inside the pyramid hole, but all these years after it was made, there's something quite charming about this. And even if it's a so-bad-it's-good movie, it actually has a 100% good soundtrack, filled with delightful ELO tunes in search of a dignified picture. Anyway, it's an amazing party movie, filled with laugh-out-loud moments (most of them in the most dramatic scenes) and sing-along numbers. Now that they're turning it into a big Broadway musical, it would be nice to have a fun, comprehensive and complete Collector's Edition, filled with documentaries and interviews. Xanadu looks the kind of production whose backstory is surely much more exciting and interesting than the movie itself...
