3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Enchanted   March 6, 2008

This is the story of a cartoon princess who ends up being banished to the real New York as a human one - only she retains her cartoon ideas in our bustling 21st century world. As such, it is another example of the 'fish out of water' type film such as Crocodile Dundee or Splash and it has plenty of scope for laughs.

The plot is predictable (prince rescues princess) but then it IS a parody of the prince-rescues-princess films that Disney have pumped out since Snow White, 70 years ago. For sending up themselves Disney should be applauded, but while it is amusing with some gags, they are quite lame, even if you are 8 years old. Shrek 1, for instance, has far higher quality jokes. The CG rodent is as annoying as Jah Jah Binks in Star Wars and most of the cast are just as banal.

So, it does sound rather dreary and, on the whole, it is.

However, the one thing that lifts the film from purely rental-fodder is the peformance of Amy Adams. She starts off as a bit girlie-girlie irritating yet, as the film progresses, you warm to her as the gullible princess lost in the evil modern world (well, it IS New York). A bit like Daryl Hannah in Splash, Amy's acting is endearing and enchanting in itself, for she portrays the innocent heart-warming princess with incredible zest. She is convincing and - it has to be said - surprisingly beautiful as a redhead. There are plenty of closeups of her help-me innocent face and this sustains the charm of the film so that, by the end, you find yourself captivated by her performance (especially when those of her co-stars are so wooded and predictable).

After the standard (but far too short) good vs evil fight at the end, it all ends happily ever after. But then you expect that, don't you?

It's an interesting idea but it's not a classic and never will be: the plot is as simple as can be; the gags are too sparse and flimsy; the CG rodent is too annoying and twee; the male leads are unconvincing; and even the heavyweight baddie performance by Susan Sarandon is too fleeting for impact.

However, Amy Adams is both a gorgeous and huggable princess with wonderful innocence and I'd watch the film again purely for her refreshing performance.

So: 7/10, but more like 5/10 without Amy. It's not a classic but pre-teens girls in particular will enjoy it. Worth a rent.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!   February 17, 2008

I saw this film on a Sunday afternoon with my friend, and not a kid between us! It was a great feel-good movie for a lazy weekend afternoon. Just the right mix of kitsch, humour, romance, songs and cleverness to entertain - how nice to see a film that doesn't need to rely on smut, shock or cynicism to attract its audience.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it. So did my girls.   February 15, 2008

I went to see this in the cinema expecting a cartoon and a nice snooze through most of it. I took my two daughters age 8 and 6 and they didn't move all the way through it. I have to say, neither did I, McDreamy from Grey's was an unexpected added bonus (Patrick Dempsey). It is a fabulous film destined to become a classic in my opinion. I came on this site today to buy the DVD I enjoyed it so much. Yes, ME as well as the children.

if you haven't seen this film then there is something wrong with you! It is by far the best film Disney have produced for years. There's something for everyone and you'll be sMiling for hours after you leave the cinema (and every time you think of the film for days after too !!)

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets !   February 13, 2008

My family went to see Enchanted at the cinema (mum, dad 8yr old girl & 6 yr old boy). I must admit I went prepared for a boring couple of hours (with the ads etc) having seen a lot of the other 'must see' films aimed at kids last year and been thoroughly dissapointed with most... How wrong I was ! Enchanted is a brilliant film and definately a future classic. All the family loved it including Dad (this amazed me). It has everything in it comedy, romance, drama. Truly the best film I have seen in ages and I will definately be getting the DVD. It's not just for girls !!
