Tosca - live from Rome version. August 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
How much longer must we wait for the 'live' version of the Domingo/Malfitano/Raimondi 'Tosca' to be reproduced on DVD? The settings are so perfect that Puccini himself would surely have approved!
A 'live' Tosca, as good as being in the theatre June 16, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I cannot understand why this is not on DVD, as this production made history in opera, being filmed in the actual places over 24 hours. It was not mimed ,as in film ,so the visceral excitement was there as in the opera house (almost). The three main protagonists were excellent. Domingo was almost too old for the part but he is so comfortable in it and so believable. Added to that, his singing was glorious even when he stumbled, fell, got up again and carried on singing, it was definately 'live'. Malfitano certainly looked the part and her chemistry with Domingo was superb. She is an excellent actress but the close-ups didn't do her any favours as she was a touch overly expressive. Raimondi made a superb Scarpia, again his acting was excellent, his lust for Tosca was palpable. All in all an excellent production which deserves to be preserved on DVD, as there isn't another quite like it!
