Nowhere near the other reviews depict August 19, 2008 This is definitely a good scanner, no question, its got alright quality and is quite cheap for a scanner. But it had some drawbacks. - difficult to keep clean - too long, not wide enough - unnecessary buttons - short cables - can glitch (making a non-stop irritating, high pitch scream)
But of course, if you can overlook these small problems its fine, quick scanning, light weight and has a decent adjuster for the lid (to scan books and larger items) A general scanner, not for anyone in fine art.
Memories preserved July 31, 2008 Relying on other Amazon reviews, I bought this with the requirement of scanning the 700 odd slides that my father took of my and my three siblings' childhood. I am really pleased with the performance of the scanner in the following ways: 1. It works with Photoshop on my old Mac 2. Speed is OK - about 8 minutes to scan 4 slides at 2400 dpi 3. Quality is excellent - so good that it really points up the inadequacy of the camera my dad used! 4. The Canon scanner interface is really easy to use - and has useful additions like features like an anti-fade button
Some of the slides have some mould on them and some have faded quite badly, so its good to know that they will now be preserved and will now be available for us all.
canoscan 4400F July 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility I'm delighted with this scanner, I hadn't used one before and it's very easy to use with good software. The buttons on the front of the scanner do quick scans in pdf format (photos, written documents etc)and scanned documents can be linked directly to email or a printer to get a copy.
The software allows you to scan images in as jpeg files (better quality images but a bit slower to do). I've used this to copy dozens of mounted slides of photos taken in the 1960's,and then I've edited them in photoshop, but you can use the provided software. It's all very straightforward. I would recommend this to anyone wanting digital images of photos from prints or negatives, the quality is excellent.
It will take 4 mounted slides or a strip of negatives, it's time-consuming to do a lot of photos but well worth the effort.
Trouble with scaning negatives July 11, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
An excellent flatbed scanner however there does seem to be a common fault that has also caused problems to another reviewer. On scaning negatives there is a vertical blue line about 1/4" from the edge af the scanned image. On contacting Canon I was told it was probably a faulty LED and should send it back for replacement. As I do not use it for negative scanning much and this was just a bonus I can't be bothered.
Super little machine! June 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was forced to buy a new scanner due to Epson not providing a driver for my old one now that I've got a new PC. It was hardly used and in perfect working order - a shameful waste. However, every cloud has a silver lining! What a little cracker the Canoscan 4400F is. Very easy to set up and simple to use. No 1" thick manual to wade through (as with my Epson model and I never did understand how to use it properly!) only an 8 page easy start guide. Just remember to take the mains cable out of the box before you take it up to the loft for storage and then plug it in! I didn't and couldn't understand why my PC didn't recognise the scanner - whoops. I had been installing rather a lot of devices on the new PC all at once so it was easily forgotten. The box with the power cable in is tucked underneath nestled in the polystyrene. Nothing more to say really as I've only just had a quick play, but it easily coped with an old negative I tried and my first treasured photo came out very well too. I can't wait to start organising all my old prints and negatives. I can recommend this scanner.
