5 out of 5 stars A good bargain   July 6, 2008

I ordered this from Amazon, and as always it arrived after just 2 days. It's a lovely entry-level PC perfectly capable of doing all the basic things like word-processing, email and Internet. Of course it is necessary to buy a separate screen if you don't have one. If you are going to run modern video games, it would be necessary to upgrade the graphics and sound card.

I love Vista, and it runs perfectly well on this PC - so long as you buy extra memory, as the amount supplied is inadequate. Currently priced at around 180 plus another 10 for an extra 1Gb RAM, this represents incredibly good value for money compared to other high street or Web vendors.

The accompanying mouse and keyboard are quite basic, but fit-for-purpose. The PC itself is surprisingly high quality and stylish for a budget purchase.

5 out of 5 stars more ram needed!   July 4, 2008

when i saw this pc i thought better see the reviews before i buy and you know what, im glad i did because you will not be getting anything done quickly without some extra ram. i think you can buy a 2gb ram stick with the pc together for just over 200. once you do this you have a decent pc to play with for not a lot of money.word of warning though, if you take it apart yourself you will invalidate your waranty so dont expect acer to give you much help should things go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars A "temporary replacement" I ended up keeping   May 24, 2008

In terms of hardware this is a fantastic deal. It's the accompanying software that lets it down, in my opinion.

When my computer (that I've had for seven years and to be honest had an irrational attachment to) inexplicably blew up three months ago, it was a traumatic experience. Then I realised that work would become a lot more difficult (as in impossible) without a computer. I was a bit tight on money, so I scrambled to the internet and bought this as a temporary replacement.

I tried to use Vista. Honestly, I did. I thought "You know, I've been bashing this OS for a good while without really giving it a try". Then it just failed on me randomly. Vista will technically run with 512 gig of RAM. But it won't run very well. Even turning off all of the unnecessary eye candy (which, as far as I can see, is the only new feature anyone might like about Vista, unlike XP which actually merged the UNIX-like things from NT with the games friendly DOS-based Windows) doesn't speed it up. And you really can't blame Acer for including Windows Vista. Microsoft don't want people to still sell XP. They themselves have pretty much stopped selling it. They want everyone to migrate to Vista.

If you have a license for Windows XP or Windows 2000, then this is a great machine. If you're like me and prefer Linux, it's even better. With a lighter (and better) OS, this computer will enable you do just about any day to day computer task. It is not a computer designed for gamers (unless you're like me and still only play Doom and Fallout). For your average computer user however it will permit them to browse the internet, email, use office applications, use instant message applications (also known as the electronic chatterbox), and basically everything else you need.

If you don't have a license for Windows XP or Windows 2000, and open source software scares you so you'd rather stick with Vista, then you are not my friend, but more importantly you're going to need to put more RAM into this machine. RAM is cheap which makes one wonder why they didn't stick more into this - even another stick of 512 would work wonders. If you're going to run Vista, a minimum of 1 GB of ram is recommended. 2GB is better. Installing RAM isn't difficult to do and there are a million places on the web that will give you reliable information on how to do this. I think it's worth noting (and I don't think that other reviews have mentioned this) that there are warranty seals on the back of the tower, and removing them will void your warranty. To me, this isn't that bad a thing, but it's something to keep in mind if you're paranoid.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed but easily remedied   April 14, 2008

Imagine buying a Ford Focus and it came fitted with only two of the normal four spark plugs (do cars have spark plugs anymore?). Anyway, performance would be pretty poor and you would not be too pleased. But hey, for 12 you can buy two extra spark plugs and problem solved. You might wionder why Ford did not fit the extra two plugs in the first place?

The Acer SA90 is a bit like this. It's a decent, Ford Focus type p.c. Unfortunately, it will come with 512 MB of RAM which is nowhere near enough to operate Vista and it will run very, very slow indeed and you will wish you had kept your old p.c. running XP. But hey, whilst you are ordering your SA90, add a pair of Kingston Technology 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM to your shopping basket for around 12. Pop them in the memory slots and hey presto, your SA90 runs like a perfectly good Ford Focus.

Basically, if you or a pal is happy to fit the extra 2 GIG memory and you don't want to play fast games then this is a perfectly good machine and will run Office and access the Net fine. If you are not happy about fitting the extra memory then buy something with more memory installed.

It took me less than five minutes to upgrade to 2 GIG and although I dislike Vista compared to XP, I am otherwise very happy with my purchase which is really good value for money - even with purchasing the extra memory. 4/5 for not fitting the full complement of spark plugs in the first place!

My old PC a Targa from Lidle was out of guarantee and the new Hp printer I had bought would not run on it (My O.S.was XP Home). Saw this one in Amazon and decided to go for it as it had Vista. It runs a little slow so I upped the ram today to 1GB, (Perhaps I should have gone higher) Windows media Player does not work to well so you need plug ins or upgrade Windows to Home Premium, that is perhaps what I will do. Not sure about the performance of the DVD RW yet, I had problems with the software first of all but is seems to have improved. But not a bad little machine for the price.
