Blurry photos when cropping, fine for smaller shots August 20, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Dissapointed with the quality of photos. Comparing the 1010 to its previous model, 840 - there was a big difference in quality of photos. 1010 was blurry around the edges and 840 was crisp. This is the disadvantage of having all the extra's packed into a compact camera- however, you would think that Olympus make the newer model atleast of the same quality. Fine for regular photos, but as soon as you want to do some cropping and blowing photos to larger sizes, sacrifice quality a great deal. I find the 840 the better option, or even sharper photos are produced by Casio. Can't comment on other brands of camera's, as I haven't used them as yet. I would recommend you try it out in the shop first, and make a decision.
Small, user friendly and intuitive August 8, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This ia amazing little camera which is very intuitive to use. If you have not used a digital camera before you will find this easy to get to know. If you have owned an Olympus digital camera before, you will be an expert with this in no time.
The most outstanding feature of this compact (and colourful) model is that it has a 7x OPTICAL zoom and 35x digital zoom. (The 7x digital zoom in the description is an error.) Even when at maximum zoom it focuses well and takes excellent pictures. The macro and super macro features also provide very high quality images.
You can select the image quality from 10.1 megapixels downwards and even lower image quality settings provide very good quality pictures.
This camera has 23 scene selectors which enable you to automatically set the camera to get optimum results. For example, the sunset setting will improve the colours of the image and other settings such as landcape, document and behind glass are perfect for sightseeing holidays.
If you are looking for optimum quality pictures in a small camera this is an excellent choice.
Recently Bought - Fantastic Camera June 23, 2008 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
After recently buying this camera I was instantly impressed with the image quality from the first picture, it is clear from the start that this model is delivering the 10 Mega pixels that it claims and works to its peek straight out of the box. It has a very quick start up time and although it does take a couple seconds before taking another picture in normal mode, everything else makes up for this and with the time it takes to see the picture you've taken you don't even notice the slight delay.
This model has a whole list of features most of which are automatically on from out of the box, such as dual image stabilization which keeps pictures perfect even with hand shacking. It has a very clear 2.7" hyper crystal display screen and 7x optical zoom, which next to no other camera has for the same price and 5x digital zoom as well (optical zoom being the more important of the two).
The camera itself is built really well, lovely to hold, light weight and simply a pleasure to use and if you look around you'll see that about 9 out of 10 reviews on this camera are very positive.
Sub standard camera from Olympus May 8, 2008 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
The 1010 has a smaller - 1/2.3" CCD sensor with 10 megapixels. More pixels on a smaller area means that a pixel size must be much smaller which results into a lower picture quality, and yet the manufactuers own website states "Better low light shooting thanks to BrightCapture Technology".
After taking some very poor quality pictures, and contacting Olympus, their own words of advise being "to set the ISO value manually and keep the ISO settings as low as possible". Not very good from a company that states of this model the "ultimate in modern compact photography". If I wanted to set the ISO manually I would have opted for an SLR.
The face detection has also been a real disappointment. My camera, since the day I purchased it, has been set up in face detection mode. I have seen it in action once, only never to be seen again!
