Amazon.co.uk Review Learn French Now! 9.0 comes with two CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations and practising speech against the voice of a native speaker. The other CD has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker and the games hone the things that have been learned. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial that will explain a topic in more detail. The section on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based on common situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc.--with some examples that demonstrate a wicked sense of humour. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful and rounds out a well-composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green

Should learning a language really be this much fun? September 16, 2003 67 out of 85 found this review helpful
I recently purchased this software to learn French. There are too many features within the programme to outline them here. Suffice to say that if FrenchNow 9.0 were ten times the cost it would still be bargain of the decade. I tuned into a French radio programme the other day and was astonished at how much of the programme I could follow and understand.I'm convinced that within an hour or so I could converse with a French native and not have to keep apologising for my poor French. If 54 year old me who looks after his severely disabled mum can do it - so can you: buy it!

This cd rom is more catered for those with at least a basic understanding of the french language. Some techniques applied to help learn are fun and interesting for example a swingometer that responds to your voice telling you wheter you need to "keep practicing" "good" or pro!" but others fail to keep you interested, for example the grammer and future, past or present participals which are essential to learning the language and so this is the place the cd rom fails. no singular words are provided to help you learn vocabulary and so the only words you'll learn are those in the set conversations they provide you to learn. On the whole i was disappointed with this cd, especially as it boasts "#1 best selling learning software" on the front of it's box.
