4 out of 5 stars Takes getting used to   June 23, 2008
If you've been used to using previous versions, i'd say stick to them. Office 07 has a very different layout to its older versions. It can take some getting used to depending on how good you are at using computers. It took me a while to find some of the features i wanted, but i suppose thats because of the new additional features which make it easy to manipulate the text and have more control.

If you just want to get things done quickly with no fuss i don't think this would be for you. But i really like it!

I brought this office package because is said Home/Student on it thinking i would get full versions of word, excel and powerpoint but was disappointed that i didn't have the full version of powerpoint. Be warned! Its only got powerpoint viewer, which is of no use if you need to create a powerpoint presentation. The description on amazon is misleading. If i had not have damaged the packaging trying to open the box i would have returned it. Also, if you're used to other versions of word you're probably not going to like the look of MS Word. Why Microsoft need to change the look of software like word is beyond me. Be careful when you buy.

I purchased this because I like to be running up-to-date software, and to have the best possible software. I'd been a very satisfied user of Microsoft Office Standard 2003, and used it thoroughly through a degree and into a professional qualification to great effect.

Microsoft Office 2007 is a disaster.

I installed it onto my brand new Sony VAIO laptop (top of the range, with a Blu-ray drive and all possible extras, in case a sceptical reader is questionning the power available to me) only to find that of the four programs contained, Excel worked fine for viewing files, but for some reason ceased to work every time I tried to copy and paste something; PowerPoint and Word displayed the messages "this program has stopped working and must close" as soon as I tried to open them - before they'd fully opened! The only program that worked as it was meant to was OneNote, but for the life of me I haven't a clue what this program alone does to justify the price.

I thought that perhaps the problem was I needed to download some upgrades to get it up to speed with the many patches and upgrades I'd downloaded for Windows Vista (with which I'd assumed it would work perfectly) but after several hours of downloading all the essential updates from Windows Update and restarting my PC several times to make sure that said updates were correctly installed, I was having the same problems.

I fully admit that perhaps I'm doing something wrong. But I've never had a problem installing and operating software before, and if there is some complex piece of code that's crippling this supposedly sophisticated program, frankly I've no interest in owning it. I don't buy software to challenge my abilities to solve complex computational problems. I buy software to be installed quickly, to be straightforward to use and to be useful in my day-to-day computing needs.

This will be returned promptly and the excellent Office 2003 will be reinstalled. Next time, I won't be so eager to get the latest upgrade. I'll give a little more attention to the negative feedback given by others.

1 out of 5 stars Pity   June 7, 2008

Like several office users reviewing Office 2007 I have just put my hands to my head in despair at having to learn something that was easy back in Office 4.2, let alone 2003. Apart from writing a simple letter, if I want to do anything in the way of formatting, or adding autotext I have to trawl the help files. I gave up after and hour and have gone back to my own laptop. We use Office 97 - 2003 and this is not a problem: I use Mac, Windows and Linux and I have come to the conclusion after trying to use Office 2007 that I might just have purchased my last Microsoft product. Open Office is limited, but it works, Office 97 is familiar and now unsupported, but it works: I don't want to learn a new system. If, like me, you prefer the familiar, don't bother to buy this product, it's not worth it. If you are new to the whole thing, you might be interested in investing the time to learn how to use it, but if you only want simple spreadsheets and word-processing, why pay at all - get open office. I'm not an MS critic, ordinarily, but this product is like a new car with a steering wheel at the back - it might look like a porche, but it don't drive like one!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money - stick with 2003   June 5, 2008

I have been trialing Office 2007 for my business for 3 months. So far I am very disappointed and have NOT upgraded the other 12 people to this version (are you listening MS?). It is expensive to buy and offers absolutley no major improvement. Some key irritations are:
- If you have user 2003 then the new navigation is more complex and difficult to learn
- It is slower than 2003! (I have a top spec PC)
- The default file extension is different (ie docx) making it imcompatible with past versions unless you download a fix
- Excel screws up 2003 files!
- I am a major word user - processing large and complex business documents with style sheets etc. All the bugs are still there.

I am in the process of moving my company to Open Office which is free and does enough that the average user will need.

Do not buy unless you are desperate.
