Great game, shame about the story March 6, 2008 Firstly, if you want to play as a gladiator, gaining loads of different weapons, shields, armour and skills, beating the potatoes out of other gladiators with lots of control over your character then buy this game. The fighting side of the game is brilliant - you get a real sense of the Roman empire when you see items like celtic long swords, southern (African) shields and so on. When you duel with the one man army gladiators you may wet yourself at first - they look pretty menacing!
What I hate about the game is the story. It plays out as if you have a choice at certain points in the game but really you don't. By the 50th day you're sent off for a last bout and then it seems to end. Maybe I hadn't played it properly somehow. So by the time you're a big hot shot gladiator, who can buy slaves for himself and train them, the game ends. The voice overs are atrocious - the chef is a Scot but, as usual, they got some non-Scottish numpty to do the voice. There are too many little loading points too - you get used to it but I just don't think it adds anything to the game.
I would recommend reading the manual front to back before playing otherwise you'll miss out on upgrades and opportunities. Overall it's a great game with a ridiculous story that leaves you scratching your head.
Surprisingly good. June 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This must be one of the most underated games ever. It deserves to be up there with the likes of onimusha, ninja gaiden etc. It chronicles the life of a slave trained in the art of gladiatorial combat to be the ultimate killing machine and eventually winning his freedom in the arena. The only critiscism I have is that the enviromental graphics are somewhat simplistic however the character models are amazingly detailed to the extent that when there is an injury to u or your opponent u actually bleed in real time. The movements during combat are just amazing and the fluidity and realism of the various combos is a joy to watch especially when using twin blades. You can customise your gladiator to the nth degree with a massive amount of really cool looking weapons and armour which are also historically accurate. The jewel in the crown of this game however is the combat control system. Individual buttons control the left arm and right arm therefore u are able to string together combos in a realistic manner and target specific parts of your opponents anatomy. The system is easy to pick up but difficult and rewarding to master. Also to add to the realism there is a stamina bar so that if u go for all out attack the bar will run out and your character will have to stop to regain stamina during which hes a sitting duck. I could go on and on( I probably already have !) Buy this game and u wont regret it.
Totally absorbing March 15, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I'm an older gamer (47) and bored with many typical shoot-em ups. This game is different, it makes me come back for more. For a start, for me it creates a real sense of ancient Rome, gladiatorial combat and the like. The combat graphics are stunning and smooth, the lighting vivid and realistic - you can almost feel the Roman sun on you. The combat is also detailed, sharp (ow!) and engrossing and even realistic. The only downside is it takes one heck of a lot to get to a decent game save situation - get through 5 matches only to be wiped out: 1 hour's play. There is much hidden in the game. Find a walk-through or cheat and lots will be revealed. You CAN also play in "arcade" mode - using the Arena option at start takes you to instant combat. Great for practice - the duels are fast and furious, opponent AI is superb! Meanwhile, in the main game the early opponents AI is pretty dumb but they still hit hard and (oddly) when they threaten you it's in a Scottish accent! Strange, but true. Just watch as you approach a fighter's back and he turns to jab you with a lightning thrust - very impressive. Shadow of Rome is oft quoted as superior. I have that game but prefer this one - Shadow has poor graphics and a cartoon-like approach to the visual style. Its fun, but I prefer Colosseum.
Brilliant! October 13, 2005 32 out of 37 found this review helpful
Despite what the reviews say, this is a brilliant game. This game was somewhat overshadowed by 'Shadow of Rome', released a few months earlier. But this game has so much to offer. If you're familiar with the Dynasty warriors series you'll love it. If not you have to try both! This game has had me addicted. From the beginning you create your own character and start out life as a slave. You train yourself to become a fighter and then fight in a small arena. From here you advance ranks, gain new weapons and fight in various forms of combat. The most exciting of these are hunting- where you fight animals, and duel - where you can fight many different famous opponents-including caesar, and mock battles, where you re-enact famous roman battles for the crowds pleasure. This game has quite a good story and will have you coming back for more. You can never fight the same battle twice. You are always after new weapons and armour and choose a fighting style. Various missions and punishments alter the storyline, determining whether you will earn your freedom. The greatest feeling you recieve is when your opponent has mocked you-you knock his shield from his hand and charge in for the kill. You'll be similarly worried when you're covered in blood and five tigers lunge for the kill...I surrender!!!This is worth a try at least. You won't be disappointed.
