Burnt out!! June 18, 2008 I have read all the reviews and can agree with all of them, yes it is space age, yes it is noisy, yes it is big, yes it is slow but it was fun while it lasted. One of the elements has now blown after less than a year suggesting build quality is not that good and it does not appear that spares are available. Now nothing more than an ornament this toaster has now been consigned to the tip!
Non-replaceable element blew after 13 months - Breville very unhelpful February 16, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Similarly to other reviewers' comments here, toaster's cooking elements (LH 2 out of 4) failed to light up 1 month out of warranty period, and Breville unhelpful to the point of being rude. In a totally unsympathetic manner Breville advised to dispose of the toaster as there were no serviceable parts.
The toaster is good looking and motorised, but these attributes should be completely disregarded when considering the purchase of this item.
I investigated Breville's stated inability to service this toaster, as the simple possibility of a wire having become loose existed. I purchased a set of security screwdriver heads from Amazon needed to open up the toaster, but found no loose wires or other obvious defects. Power was getting through to the cooking elements, suggesting that the LHS element wire had blown somewhere in its coils. Internal access to these, however, appeared very difficult, and, as significant time and money had already been wasted, I did not investigate further.
I disposed of the toaster (after 14 months ownership) and will not buy Breville again, especially after reading at this site, a significant number of similar negative Breville comments regarding blown non-replaceable elements in their brushed stainless steel electric kettles occurring just out of warranty period (I own one of these as well!).
Also, toaster is Chinese made, but it could be Breville specifying cheap components in this way-too-short-lived, mass-produced piece of now rubbish. Possible evidence here of Breville engaging in planned obsolescence.
Final woes, the toaster DOES NOT HAVE A HIGH LIFT FUNCTION as stated in Amazon's product description, it DOES NOT ACCOMMODATE THICKER SLICED BREAD OR SLICED BUNS/ROLLS, and mine DID NOT BROWN EVENLY, from the beginning.
Slow toaster February 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sure it's pretty and sure it's gimmicky, but that's about as far as this toaster goes. I've had ours for about 18 months and I think I've had enough of it. It takes ages to toast bread and when it does, it's very uneven. It seems to be getting more uneven with age - seems like it cooks from one corner of the bread outwards. Time for a new one I reckon. If I had the choice again, I wouldn't buy this toaster. Why is it so difficult to make a fast, even toaster?
Died after six months.......... December 18, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was very excited about this toaster because I love gadgets! I loved the way the bread was placed in the slot and after selecting your browning preference you press the button and the grips glide in and lower the bread s l o w l y into the slot. Then after a (comparatively) longish time, the toaster beeps and the toast is slowly elevated! Brilliant..... when it works. But.......the beeps when the toast was done were very loud and annoying, I used to rely on them as a secondary alarm clock to get my lot up in the moring! Then, two days ago and only six months since I bought it, the left hand slot couldn't engage anymore so therefore the elements wouldn't heat up. So I've had to return it. Not very impressive. I think that Breville had a great idea but were unable to build it sufficiently to last any length of time. Shame. Have replaced it with a Prestige Deco which looks great, and is hopefully better!
Rubbish November 25, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Had this toaster for over a year now and getting quite fed up with it. It takes forever to make the bread even lightly brown (5 mins) then it requires some encouragement to raise the toast far enough to lift out. Nothing but a cheap and nasty toaster with a gimmick, you can get good toasters at this price.
