they really are! July 18, 2008 I'd agree with other reviewers that it's maybe not for total novices, but I love this books and all the cakes I've made from it have turned out very nicely (except for the glaze for the flourless chocolate cake, cake was great, glaze didn't work). A couple of friends who are less domestically inclined than me bought the book after browsing through it at my house and they love it too. Plus it really is a beautiful read.
I want to retire and open up a cake shop! January 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I grew up having homemade birthday cakes so naturally this book appealed to the inner child I have neglected due to hectic schedules etc so if like me you crave homemade cakes that look as good as your mums/nans/grans here it is!
There's a recipe for even the most fussiest of bakers and the cheesecake recipes are to die for. There's also a section on smaller cakes so this book would be brilliant on the shelf of families with small children too.
The images are simply delicious and once you've started baking these cakes I'm afraid there's no stopping...
Second Favourite November 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After Nigella's Domestic Goddess this is my favourite book in the kitchen. First of all it contains a Sachertorte recipe that didn't contradict itself and utterly befuddle (though that does come from another book). Second, even though my mother spent most of her professional life teaching cakey things, I don't have any particular skill in that area yet I have had only successes so far with this book. Incidentally the pictures are mouth-watering.
Superb! September 18, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I am a professional cake baker and I got given this book as a gift. I don't usually buy cake books as I have so many but this book was amazing. It gave me so many new ideas, especially with presentation. It has a great number of "kids" cakes but also a lot of cakes that would be great for adults. I think that this book would be good for the complete beginner or the most experience cake decorator. I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone! There is a cake for every person, situation, budget and occassion!
stunning July 23, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book has a wide variety of ideas for cakes that - no matter how awful you are in the kitchen - turn out beautifully. I'm hardly a chef, but from cupcakes to cheese cakes i've been thrilled every time. A stunning cookbook (trust me i'm a compulsive buyer!) that will have you gaining pounds in days... but it's worth it!
