Nice, but could be better... April 8, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this after being bought, and falling in love with, their first book "The Whimsical Bakehouse". This isn't a bad book, it has lots of recipes and is well illustrated, but I found it lacked the magic of the first book.
Unlike the first book, many of the cakes in this book get their "whimsy" from the shaped moulds that they are baked in, rather than any particular decorating technique. This is fustrating when you don't want to buy 10 new cakes tins just to make an interesting cupcake.
I have only tried 2 of the recipes so far - the blueberry muffins & the vanilla cupcakes. I personally found the cupcakes too dense and "bready", but when I took them into work, they were finished off within hours and one person remarked they were the best cupcakes he'd ever had, so maybe I was overly critical! The muffins were very easy & turned out very nicely, although both recipes seemed to make more cakes than specified.
All in all, it's a nice book, just not particularly inspiring.
