Delicious food March 24, 2008 I wanted to contradict the other review. I am not an especially experienced cook, but after several other cookbooks I was very happy to find this one which was much superior. It is well-laid out, unpretentious, covers all the bases and the recipes work. I particularly recommend the soup section - I have tried every one (I was running a cafe) and they're all good. The meat section is also good. Yes the food is sometimes rich, in a traditional no-nonsense way, but if you prefer more insipid fare the ingredients are easily tweaked.
Did they test these recipes? February 15, 2005 16 out of 23 found this review helpful
I am awarding 1 star for the clear layout of the book with illustrations of every recipe, and 1 for the range of recipes. Unfortunately, the book loses marks for typing errors, and the fact that if the recipes had been properly tested it would have been clear they would not work. I have never before come accross a lemon meringue pie recipe that uses 3 whole eggs in the filling, rather than just the yolks. I am also deducting a star for the lack of consideration of healthy eating. Although it does not advertise itself as a low fat cookbook, the use of butter, sugar and cream seems excessive. Using the same example of lemon meringue pie, I was shocked to see 250g of butter, and that is just in the filling, not the pastry! All in all, it is a nice looking book, with some good recipes, but the results have been disappointing.
