5 out of 5 stars Sweet memories!   June 1, 2004

Brilliant book! Got real disappointed when first got it - no pictures to go with the recipes, looking rather dull. But a year later I browsed a few pages and got absolutely hooked reading all the stories & comments as well as quotes from famous Russian literature books! Many descriptions made me real home-sick and I decided to abandon for a while my experiments with all other cusines and get down to my own Soviet roots - and so far I didn't look back! All dishes I tried so far were perfect - the author seemed to travel all over the place and wrote down only THE best there was - 'samije Slivki' as one would say!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook   January 11, 1999

This is the best cookbook I own. Every recipie is explained well, so they aren't as difficult as they look. There's also some sections about regional cuisines of the former Soviet Union, which I find to be highly informative. I would have like to see some pictures, but perfection is hard to come by.

5 out of 5 stars Not a cookbook but a cultural experience   December 29, 1998

I treasure this book. I read it again and again and never tire of its beautiful and vivid descriptions of food and feasting in the former Soviet Union. When I open "Please To The Table" I become infected by the authors' enthusiasm for the cuisine of half a dozen countries. Even though I'm not normally an adventurous eater, and I rarely have time to cook, every time I open this book, I can't help being seduced by the descriptions of each dish. Instantly, I'm in the mood to entertain. I want to fires up the stove, load up the table, chill some vodka, and gather my friends about me.

My Russian-born husband nods fondly when I read aloud to him from this book and gets so excited by the tantalizing promise that perhaps we can recreate some of his old favorite dishes. So far, everything I've tried has turned out beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best single sources for Russian cooking!   June 15, 1998

I have traveled to Russia many times. This cookbook has all the regional dishes I have ever had! If you are to own just one Russian cookbook, this is the one to have. Well written, well reserached, accurate tastes!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Informative and accurate.   May 25, 1998

I'm of Russian heritage and have taken four trips to Russia/Ukraine, and cook quite a bit. This book has all of the dishes from many regions that I tasted while in the former U.S.S.R., and anything I've tried tastes right! Many interesting ideas for all courses make it easy to create your own banquet...You will have to work, no shortcuts, and that's how it should be.
