Very American - lots of hard to find ingredients September 1, 2008 I don't recommend this book for non-US dwellers simply because it uses many America-centric ingredients (eg spicy turkey sausage links - good luck finding them! - and Romano cheese, cilantro (?) and salt cod etc). I'm sure that the recipes are fine but I found myself getting very frustrated by unusual ingredients and so have not cooked many of them.
A lot of the recipes are also measured in 'cups', so prepare to translate or buy a cup set too.
I am now pregnant with my second child and will do what I did during my first - eat well, use my normal recipe books and not obsess too much over intake of perfect food.
Disappointingly impractical..... October 25, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this book because of the previous reviews but was quite disappointed. Most of the recipes offer flavours which can be difficult to stomache for a pregnant woman encountering nausea. It appears to offer a 'completely new' way of eating which again is not entirely suitable for the irratic likes/dislikes that pregnancy brings. When I am feeling ill and nauseous I do not believe that is an ideal time to re-invent my eating habits so drastically. It would be nicer if the recipes were more geared towards those ingredients and dishes the average pregnant woman is used to but which have been adapted for nutritional value.
Loved every recipe in this book- and I wasn't even pregnant! February 7, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book has WONDERFUL recipes! I whipped one up every week when I got the book, and now many have become family favorites. I look forward to the next creative effort from this talented chef!
Simple, delicious, practical. July 5, 1998 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book answers the need for simple and practical eating duing pregnancy. There are answers to problems such as nausea, heartburn, an constipation. You do not have to eat rabbit food to stay healthy in pregancy! There is even room for things like the recipe "Sinful chocolate chip cookies." My cravng for salt was satisfied deliciously with "Orvieto Chicken," a crispy Tuscan-style dish. Lots of delicious dishes with greens, such as Pasta with Swiss Chard and Pine Nuts.
Consise, informative and delicious!!!! July 2, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a great book! Combines clear and detailed nutritional information for those considering pregnancy, pregnant and post-partum. Suggestions on snacking, eating out etc. The recipes are incredible and broken out into trimesters. You can tell that a gourmet chef created them. Takes the foods you are "supposed" to eat and makes them into clever and delicious meals. Also has a recipe index of those dishes which provides larges portions of needed iron, folic acid etc. A really great book!
