The Best party book I've ever used! September 2, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To call this a cook book is a bit of an understatement. I bought two books for a themed party for my daughter's birthday over a year ago. Now, as a non-cook I'm always delving into this one to find something nice to nosh when friends come over or for a relaxed family Sunday. All the recipies are easy to use and almost all dishes can be made well in advance - in fact, it's recommended. And there's more. Apart from all the fantastic food and drinks, there's help on planning the menu for every kind of occasion from a romantic meal for two right up to a huge luau (party), suggestions on decorations, and other stuff like the history of the language of the islands. (Did you know the Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters?) There's loads of info on all the aspects of Hawaiian life you would need to know to put on the best Hawaiian party. I have only one problem, that is that all the measurements are for the American market, so things are measured in cups rather than litres or pounds.(This can make adjustments easy as many ingredients are measured by volume rather than weight) Watch out for fluid ounces, too, as they are different for each side of the Atlantic. A good website will help you get to grips fully with conversions, but a brief note I added to the front of my copy reminds me that 1 GB pint = 20 fl oz and 1 US pint = 16 fl oz, 1 US cup is 8 fl oz. Do not let this put you off! I am no cook, but whenever I have used this book the plates are always cleared, and I even know how to pronounce "Humuhumunukunukuapuaa". When I bought this book, I also bought 'Hawaiian Sweets, Treats and Eats' by Aileen Chung Belshe, which I found a little bland and uninteresting, with some very strange ingredients such as paraffin, and was difficult to follow. If you're planning a social event, buy this book - it's brilliant!
