Disappointing July 19, 2008 I bought this book thinking it would have a good guide to creating sensible shopping lists and meal plans - in reality it helped me with neither. There are only 6 sides of paper devoted to shopping plans (pages 6-11 inclusive) and these are no brainers. All the receipes pages are devoted to evening meals only (main entree and desert), there are no breakfast or lunch ideas. Recipes are also mostly geared to USA market. The only useful pages in the whole book are those containing the actual shopping lists to cater for each weeks evening meals. If you want some very basic family meals and have no other cookbooks at home, or are setting up a home for the first time, this book may be useful.
Hmmmm...!!! February 2, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this book a couple of months ago and it is a superb idea and potentially very convenient. However some of the recipes are not very palatable or simply don't work! ( the cooking time for the Meatlof recipe is a great example)...this book works...but I just didn't like alot of the recipes!
An Excellent Cookery Book April 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is brilliant for men! Firstly it has a weekly shopping list and then it tells you how to cook everything, Simple! At the house im living in there are 4 of us sharing and we all put around 20 quid in total in the pot each week, one of us goes shopping and then we all take turns in cooking. Its good food and really cheap too!
Thanks!
Great Book for Busy People and a "Must Have" for Kids Just Leaving Home! February 20, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
When I received "Budget Meals" I thought it looked similar to many other cookbooks I already own, but my opinion changed when I opened it up and read the contents page. Here really is a book that does what it says on the cover, it provides recipes for meals that you can make on a budget - and not only that, it gives you weekly shopping lists for each suggested weekly meal plan so that you can even budget your housekeeping accordingly!
I really love the no nonsense recipes that "Budget Meals" contains. Often cookery books have recipes with great sounding names and lavish photographs, but they take far more preparation time than I've got available. Often they also call for tiny pinches of this or that which mean you have to buy a whole package if you don't already have them in your cupboard. This book doesn't have these problems. The recipes are basic standards that will keep your mealtimes varied but won't put you to unnecessary expense.
Apart from the 8 week meal plan, scattered throughout the book are tips and advice, and best of all for busy mums, some of the recipes even include a slow-cooker option after the normal cooking method one.
Kimberly Saunders has created a book here that's a must have for anyone trying to feed their family on a budget, and certainly something that you should give any of your kids about to move into their first home! Can't wait for the follow up!
Highly recommended, wonderful book! February 13, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am absolutely thrilled to bits with this book. Budget meals has 8 weeks of different dinner and desserts, broken up into weeks with a complete weekly shopping list. I love the fact i can go shopping with this list and have everything i need for my family dinners and desserts for a week. No more having to stop off at the shop for last minute ingredients! Ms Saunders also explains how to make up your own meal plans and adapt them to suit your family.
At the beginning of the book are recipes for basics such as pastry and biscuits. This is far superior to other budget books i have read. All the recipes are easy to make and involve little fuss, yet they are scrumptious. Favourites with my family are cranberry pork, BBQ chicken and sausage and apple pie.
Buy this cook book, its the only one you need!
