Amazon.co.uk Review Gary Rhodes may be most famous for his spiky hair and cheeky grin to a television camera, but it his devotion to British food, and British puddings in particular, that has seen him awarded Michelin stars at three different restaurants. Sweet Dreams--the author of Rhodes Around Britain and patron of City Rhode restaurant does love his puns--is a collection of traditional and modern puddings which are do-able as well as being utterly gorgeous. His accounts of old favourites like treacle tart, spotted dick and bread and butter pudding all respect the classical simplicity of these dishes yet manage to give them a modern presentational twist. He has resurrected some old puddings like gypsy tart--"one of the few school dinners I ever looked forward to," he says. "When I eventually got hold of the recipe I couldn't believe how easy it was,"--and of course invented a few new ones. Along with a helpful guide to all the basic preparations and techniques--pastry, creams, biscuits, chocolate and of course sugar-- Sweet Dreams is all you need to know about the sticky, the fruity and the yummy. --Nick Wroe

Best Dessert Cookbook Available!! January 19, 2001 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
It is a common stereotype that the Brits know nothing about food.....being a foreigner (Chinese) and having lived in the UK for 3 years, I often have to try hard to prove many wrong and that the UK is indeed an isle of plenty with wholesome fresh produce, talented chefs and interesting dishes. Many times, I get stupid responses like: " Prove it to me!" Well, with this dessert book by Gary Rhodes, I can finally make them eat their words! I am looking forward to more books by Gary Rhodes in the near future! Mr Rhodes, you deserve a medal and a nation's highest honour for doing so much justice to British food! Well done!!

I was introduced to a Gary Rhodes recipe book three years ago , now I have four of them. I live in Italy where the food is said to be the best...but all of my Italian friends can't wait to be invited to this English woman's house for his Sweeet Dreams,,,,,, everyone has been converted to Rhodes' desserts and many other recipes, like the good old yorkshire pudding so who needs Italian food when we have Gary Rhodes
For the best of British cooking, you can count on Rhodes. January 17, 1999 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Every recipe I've tried works! As with his other books, Gary Rhodes' funny introductions to each recipe make the book come to life - I even read it in bed!! It's truly sinful stuff which created my own sweet dreams of the best of British puddings. He is an underrated genius when it comes to cooking. Well done Gary! Another winner for my kitchen shelf!
