5 out of 5 stars The Greek Doctor's Diet   January 24, 2008

this is a books is clearly written and easy to understand. Dr. Fedon A. Lindberg takes pains to help you understand the theory behind the diet and the health benefits you gain. This is not really a diet book but an option to engage in a healthier way of eating for the rest of your life. There are excellent meal plans and really good recipes in the book. The pearl barley risotto is to die for.

5 out of 5 stars I've Seen The Light!   July 10, 2007

This book has been a bit of a revolution. I have tried many diets including calorie controlled, Atkins, Weetabix (yes it does exist) and have always headed the same way after a couple of weeks or (if lucky) a couple of months. The Greek Diet isn't really a diet for losing weight and then reverting back to old habits, its a whole new way of eating which keeps you feeling full, healthy and your tastebuds tingling day after day. The only negative is that the book hasn't really got many recipes which is why I highly recommend purchasing his accompanying book with 100 recipes in. Don't think this is just another fad, this really does have the potential to change your life and your families, it did mine and I believe it will continue.

5 out of 5 stars A way of eating that's pleasurable, scientifically sound, and abundantly rewarding   February 7, 2007

Some readers of this review might be disappointed when they discover that I am not reviewing Dr Lindberg's book as a dieter, but rather as a health-conscious person who is keenly aware of the beneficial effects of a low-GL diet on one's energy, fertility, and general wellbeing. Indeed, I am not a 'dieter' in the sense that I have any weight to lose, and I only bought the book because it contained some recipes that looked totally marvellous, but I can - and will - put in my two cents' worth on this wonderful book.

I cook pretty much all of my daily meals out of this book's recipe section, and out of the accompanying Greek Doctor's Diet Recipe Book, both of which espouse a way of eating that may inspire incredulity in those first encountering the diet, given that the meals are so luxurious!

I feel abundantly energetic when I eat this way, even though I follow a fairly exhausting strength-training programme three times a week, accompanied by the odd squash game. If you're hoping to avoid exercise, then I can only pity you, because even the good Dr Lindberg admits that diet alone is not enough to build optimal health - you have to move your body, and do it regularly enough that you crave it (and miss it when you don't)!

The science of GL, in my view (having read dozens of natural health-related books over the past eight years in my quest to avoid chronic illness), is watertight. It also happens to be very, very nicely explained in this book, and what is particularly helpful here (as distinct from the notable absence of such information in Nigel Denby's books on GL) is that Dr Lindberg provides the GL rating for all the recipes. That way, those of us who still like 'counting' things (i.e. adding up GL points over the course of a day) will be totally satisfied, even though one simply needs to follow his daily meal recommendations (without any earnest calculating!) to ensure stable blood-sugar levels and a resultantly blissful mood.

I certainly hope that the book's message will take hold in the hearts and minds of many women (especially younger ones - my peers) and, indeed, men. That message is, simply: low-fat diets are nonsense, as is counting food-values obsessively, so eat well, eat wholesomely, and eat with a conscious desire to feed yourself what will nourish your body without stealing nutrients from it (i.e. no white bread!). If you do, you'll be rewarded with abundant energy, good lean muscle mass, and glowing skin that reflects the smoothly-functioning bodily systems within.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing non gimicky, lifestyle, non-diet diet   January 23, 2007

I've been on a diet for at least 35 years and tried every diet going, buying all the latest gimics I've at last found a way of eating that is sustainable, increases energy and aids sustained weight loss. I feel great and I'm not hungry.

What a change a diet the recognises you have human failings ... a new way of eating good wholesome food without feeling hungry ... with excellent explanations of why diets don't work ... and why this one does!

Dr Lindberg uses the latest medical research studies to back up his recommendations ... which explain why the western way of eating is leading to increased heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

For all of you failed dieters who don't hardly eat and don't know where to turn next ...BUY IT ... ITS WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT!

PS I've never left a review on Amazon before and I've bought plenty! But I feel so strongly I want to tell you all about this way of eating!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of its kind   August 17, 2006

This book is one of many based on the glycemic index theory, that overweight is in fact caused by "overloading" the pancreas with refined carbohydrates. It is very informative, but I find the actual programme a bit complicated. My personal advice if you're into glycemic index slimming is to check out Michel Montignac's book "Eat yourself slim", it's just better.
