GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK!! October 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A few months ago, I was diagnosed with arthritis in my feet, and, eventually, I could hardly walk, due to the fact that my achillies-heels would become severely inflamed if I did just my mormal, every-day three mile walks. I also couldn't do my twice-weekly, twenty minute jogs that I had come to love and that I found really invigorating and stimulating. I was despairing, and then I picked up "Eat To Beat Arthritis" and went on their elinimation diet, and I found that citrus fruits were aggravating my arthrius and causing all my pain and discomfort. Now I don't eat citrus fruits or have drinks with citrus acid in and such, and am back doing my walking and my running. Thank you to the two wonderful authors!!!!
Worked for me September 5, 2007 This book is very much about the individual. It's not "one size fitz all". There's work to do in discovering your individual food "no go" areas. But what a bargain when you do! And it doesn't mean that you lose those problem foods from your life. It just means you don't have them very often - and you'll probably get away with it. I can't do the full milk thing with my fat intolerance. I also think the molasses means too much sugar, much as I love it, unlike a lot of people. What it offers you can get elsewhere with less sugar. Kidneys? Erk! But I can do chicken liver (yum!), lots of fruit and veg, and plenty of fish. It gives me so much confidence to know now that I should be careful about animal rennet, smoked food, gluten, citrus and some nightshades. Of course others will have different lists. Who'd have thought food could make such an impact on arthritis. This book was a major turning point for me!
A fundamental problem October 16, 2002 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I recently purchased this book for my arthritic mother. After a few minutes studying it she sighed. The problem with this book is fundamental. It's all very well creating the culinary delights it describes but what if your condition precludes standing around in the kitchen for hours preparing food? Simple, easy to prepare dishes are what's need. Oh dear back to the drawing board.
An ammendmant to my previous review September 19, 2001 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have just finished the seven week course recommended in this book and i thought i would share my thoughts now i have had a chance to evaluate the book fully. Let me first reiterate that this diet is very difficult to stick to, espically the first two weeks. However you are eating a lot healthier generally and that can only be good. The bad news is that this had absolutley no effect on me, either good or bad. I didn't identify anything i was allergic to, nor did it alleviate my condition. I have reduced my rating of this book to 3 stars because of that. I do have faith that this book would work for some people, most likely older people, so i can't criticise it too much. My advice if you want to buy it is give it a go and prepare well. Read up on gluten free products and decide if a life without these products is worth the chance that you could feel better.
Not convinced August 14, 2001 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a great looking book, easy to understand with delicious sounding recipies. However, I do have some doubts about the advice given because it goes against all other information that I have read on the subject. For example, I thought animal fats should be eliminated or reduced from the diet. This book insists on a daily "health drink" made from whole milk and frequent weekly servings of offal. There are no references or evidence to back up the advice given. To be fair, I have not tried this diet and it may work very well but I have my reservations.
