pleasant and uncampy August 29, 2008 I wouldn't normally post a review for a book like this, but the single review that is already here is so startlingly, aggressively negative, that I thought it needed a response.
No, this isn't up there with Ma Cuisine or French Provincial Cooking, but it is a pleasant, uncampy, relaxed read. I got some ideas from it, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Does not do what it says on the tin May 15, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The blurb inaccurately describes the contents of this book. What this book is, is in fact nothing but a standard recipe book (and not a particularly good one at that), with two or three suggestions for accompanying wines in the margin for each recipe. OK, I concede that here and there, scattered rather sparsely through the book, there are other occasional paragraphs talking about wine matching, from which you will learn such amazing you-never-would-have-thought-it pearls of wisdom as that the flavour of the wine should not overpower the flavour of the fish you serve it with, the Pope has been reported to exhibit some Catholic leanings, and bears have been observed by zoologists defecating in the woods.
This is a book I will certainly never get anything from, will never use, and will just take up space on my shelves until I can dump it down the charity shop. If you genuinely want to learn something aboout matching wine and food, I suggest looking elsewhere.
(Update 13/8/08: Somewhat better books I have since found are "Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommelier's Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food" and "Food and Wine Pairing: A Sensory Experience")
