1 out of 5 stars A very disappointing book from an excellent food writer   January 20, 2004

I am a great fan of Rose Elliot and I have a number of her books which I use frequently. In recent years, my family has decided to cut down on fat and sugar in our diet, and I thought the title of this book by one of my favourite food authors was promising. Sadly, the recipes are too extreme for someone who wants simply to correct the balance of their everyday diet. Those I have tried were lacking in flavour and interest, and so low in calories that the family had to fill up on bread and butter!
If you are a vegetarian in the really low calorie stage of a diet, then this book could be a useful resource for you, but if you are wanting some tasty recipes to keep your family's fat and sugar intake down on a permanent lifestyle change basis, then I would recommend taking some of Rose Elliot's normal recipes and reducing the amount of fat and oil in them, which will give excellent and appetising results.
This book was a great disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Great low fat cookbook   May 28, 2002

This book is great if you are trying to cut down a bit on fat and dairy or wheat or are trying to detox. Good as a supplement to other veggie cookbooks which can sometimes go a bit heavy on fatty and cheesy foods. You can also adapt some of the recipes if you want - eg spray some of the beanburgers etc with a little oil. Good no fat salad dressings as well which taste (ok being honest here) nearly as good as those with oil. I see this book as adding another string to your bow. Also useful if like me you have family members who are intolerent to some foods - has helped a lot with trying to find a meal that is suitable for veggies and coeliacs to eat together.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but vegetarian receipes only in this book.   March 4, 2002

This book has expanded my use of vegetables and pulses. The vegetable receipes can be used as a side dishes/main meals or accompany a meat dishes. Money well spent.

1 out of 5 stars NO fat, NO sugar, NO fruit, NO dairy - NO NOTHING!   February 13, 2002

Normally I am a big fan of Rose Elliot's writing, but this book really does not fit its title at all. You may lose weight if you follow the recipes, but you will also lose most of the fun out of meal times.

I didn't want a book that completely cuts out dairy and wheat - I want to know how to cook with them more wisely. And as for cutting out fruits!?!

This book should really be listed as suitable for people with multiple food intolerances, NOT normal vegetarians who just want to eat a little more healthily.

5 out of 5 stars Low-fat cooking for the busy, stressed out person!   July 15, 2000

This book is a god-send for someone who loves low-fat food, but who often makes excused for not eating it because it's just too complicated and fussy! Not any more. Each recipe in this book is easy to make, and delicious. Since buying it 5 days ago, I've already made three recipes and all have been a real hit - love the Sweetcorn and Courgette bake! I can see that this will take over from the Sue Kreitzman books I've relied on so far for low-fat inspiration; Rose Elliott is a down-to-earth, no fuss cook (lots of canned ingredients - great!), and if she has any plans to write a sequel to this, I for one will definitely buy it!
