Nifty little book September 30, 2008 This book is proof that good things come in small packages - it was lying unused on a shelf for a long time before I picked it up and decided to make something from it and since then the book has become grubby and stained due to the number of times I've used it. Someone else has already pointed out it is great value for money and I definitely agree on this.
A perfect book for when you need something quick to make after a long day at work! It's full of easy, uncomplicated recipes.
Good simple and tasty July 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have made lots of the recipes in this book (in fact its one of my most used recipe books)- they are always tasty, and filling, and generally fairly cheap and quick and easy to make. Unlike alot of recipe books, it tends to use mainly ingredients you would have in your cupboard, with means less trips to the shops and less money spent (and you dont end up with a cupboard full of stuff you bought for a recipe and will never use again!)
Its also fairly unsahamed about using tinned stuff or ready made sauces if it makes the recipe quicker of easier, which is a plus, and often pute in alternatives things you can use if you dont have a particular ingredient, or suggests alternative ways of cooking something to make it easier.
I'm not vegetarian, but I do like vegetarian, and didnt find that I felt like any of the recipes I made were missing meat.
Only one minor quibble - they often recommend using vegetarian alternatives to ingredients, for example vegetarian parmesan, vegetraian pesto, vegetarian feta, and I found these pretty hard (or impossible). If you are a meat eater like me, and can use normal parmesan/pesto etc, then this book is fine. If you are Vegetarian and know where to get necessary veggie alternatives, also fine. If you are a meat eater looking for something to cook for vegetarian friends, be prepared to change your recipes if you cant find the right ingredients.
not what I expected March 28, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have a few of these little goodfood books and they have been brilliant. After deciding to cut right back on the amount of meat we eat in our house i opted for this book but was a little surprised. Many of the recepies contain quite a lot of cheese (which my husband and son will not eat)meaning that it probably wont be thumbed through like the rest of my books. The dairy free chapter and the casseroles chapter did have some really good ideas but i have been a little put off with the calories and cheese content in the other chapters.
High calories alert!!! January 22, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Yes the recipies do look delicious, but the calories are so high!! On average most of the recipies contain over 300 - 400 calories per serving and some into the high 500s! Even the salads are 350-450 calories!
I'm sending it back.
good but indeed cheesy December 16, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
i have used this book alot but do agree with another reviewer that there is a fair lot of recipes that have cheese in them.
