1 out of 5 stars Ps what a bad film   August 24, 2008
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

Do knock it and what ever you do dont try it!
This film is awful. I bought it for my GF (cause im a thoughtul guy )to watch as like most women she loves Romcoms and I thought this would suit her down to the ground.

Hillary swank and Gerard Butler are about as delightful a couple as Margaret Thatcher and David Beckham and their acting is as stale as my crusty socks. I cringed at many of the supposed sentimental scenes between the two main actors in this film and so did my GF. And if anybodies heartstrings are being tugged at in this film, please contact your local emergency services as you are more than likely having a heart attack. But jokes aside, this film lacks even a remote amount of emotion.

The irish accents are just bad bad bad.

The film is full of performances youll want to forget, romance thats as romantic as a candle lit dinner in a sewage works, and comedy as funny as Roseanne Barr dressed as Ghandi. You really shouldnt waste your money or precious time on this film, me and my GF did and its time and money we will never get back.

I always try and give honest reviews and feel that this 2 hour long film has been given just that. Its just a bad movie

Ps. you have been warned.

3 out of 5 stars OK, not so bad   August 23, 2008
I watched this with my girlfriend. It was her favorie film when it was in the cinema.
I have to admit that I watched it not wanting to watch it.
To my shock it didn't suck.
Nothing against any fan of the film or book but the idea didn't attract me too much. I could kind of guess how it would end and I was right.
The idea was good, the extra with and intervie with Celia Ahern were great. James Bland, sorry, Blunt (not a fan)song is on it and the video does follow the film, kind of.

The only thing I couldn't get passed was Gerald Butler. Apart from an irish accent that rivals Ton Cruise's, I kept waiting for him to kick someone down a large pit. But some how "This Is Ireland!" wouldn't sound too good.

On the whole I found this film touching and very Chick Flick freindly, a good watch even if a little obvious in places.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   August 6, 2008

I saw this movie for the first time tonight. Having not read the book I didn't know entirely what to expect.

I laughed and I cried. This movie in my opinion is one of the best chick flicks out there. I totally loved it.

The only thing that didn't work for me was Lisa Kudrow (from the series friends). I just felt that I didn't feel her part in the movie. She is the only criticism I have of it. But that is just my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Film   July 30, 2008

Firstly the accents...so terrible that they take way too long to get used to.

Secondly the storyline... I understand that it could be seen as romantic and all but to be it is simply creepy

I know I am not part of the target audience but i had to give my opinion... it is that bad.

The only redeeming factor is Lisa Kudrow (Phoebie from Friends) who gives an outstanding and hilarious performance.

1 out of 5 stars P.S - I Hate This Film!   July 25, 2008
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

Well first off i know i'm not exactly part of the target audience for this film, but i have been known to enjoy the odd "Chick Flick" now and again.
I'd heard that the book was really good and having seen the cast list i decided it would be a nice film to watch with the love of my life on a sunday afternoon...

The credits rolled and the film starts off with Holly (the normally excellent Hillary Swank) and Gerry (Lady eye candy - Gerard Butler) embroiled in a fight..

Awful, terrible and shockingly bad Irish accent from Butler and absolutely no hint of chemistry at all between the two of them.

Anyway we move on, and the obvious happens, the guy dies and we're at the wake. Swanks performance improves from this point and dare i say it the hint of sadness is felt for her character. So it then goes on, the friends and family rally round her for her 30th birthday, and the first letter arrives. The flm picks up a bit and the idea of these letters sent from Holly's recently dead husband from his death bed is very sweet and touching.

Eventually (again fairly predictably) he tells her to go to Ireland, and for me it's at this point that any feelings of sadness or empathy you feel for Swank's Holly totally evaporates into thin air.

She meets a guy in a bar that looks and sounds and feels like her dead husband - and rather than run as far away from this realisation as her legs can carry her she, encouraged by her friends that have accompanied her on the trip, ends up sleeping with him.

Then guess what, he turns out to be a childhood friend of Butler that he hasn't seen for many years.

I could go on and on and on with the massive holes that are in this film but to be honest for my first review i think i've typed too much already.

The other sub plots of men leaving her (Holly) is probably the only redeeming feature of the film, and the only stand out performance for me that comes almost at the very end of the film comes from Kathy Bates.

It's far too long and from what i understand lost all of the charm that the book is supposed to have.

Only "The Happening" another film i watched recently - has come close to beating it to "worst film i have ever seen"

Avoid the film, read the book - and let's hope that the two screenplay writers (LaGravenese & Rogers) don't massacre any other books any time soon.
