breaks down after 2nd use! January 27, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, the breadmaker broke down after having used twice! (motor failed to turn the blade). The plus point is Amazon's excellent customer refund policy. I have since bought a good panasonic breadmaker through amazon and no problems whatsoever, makes great bread every time!
burns bread and top slumps January 11, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Had this machine for about 10 months before the bread failed to rise properly, an intermittent problem that could not be cured by changing ingredients. Machine was replaced eventually. The bread tastes good but texture can be disappointing, especially with the wholemeal setting, and the bread goes stale extremely quickly. Adding more water can improve the texture but add too much and the bread starts erupting from the pan on the 1.5lb loaf size. A further problem is the colour of the loaf: even on the light crust setting the sides of the bread are very dark. Reducing the sugar content does not seem to help the colour, but removing the bread before it is finished cooking helps a little. The fold-down blade is ingenious but still means the blade is usually stuck in the bottom of the bread and so baked bread can be difficult to remove. Finally, sometimes the loaves suffer from subsidence at the top, so that the central part of the loaf has a strongly concave shape. These issues have been consistent problems with both the original and the replacement machine so are presumably design flaws.
I wouldn't recommend this machine to others. My mother's old Panasonic breadmaker does a significantly better job, is very reliable and I would go for one of these in the future.
A good entry-point for bread-making! January 8, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I wanted a reasonably-priced machine for my first attempt at breadmaking, as so many people seem to buy them and then put them in the cupboard after a week or so.
It makes rather small loaves, which, when you take into account the hole left by the blade, can be a bit disappointing.
The quality of the bread however makes up for the size. I've tried white, wholemeal, fruit, french and sundried tomato/pesto.
There doesn't seem to be any guarantee that they will turn out the same twice - apparently sachets of yeast need to be used within 48 hours of opening. The amount of salt added makes a difference to the rise too.
It's great fun experimenting though.
Only drawback with this model is the fact that the settings and display are on the top of the machine, and if you are less than average height it's difficult to see them!
Extremely pleased with results! December 10, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this model last week for 29.99 and am very impressed so far. I have tried the basic white loaf and the basic dough for pizza.
I did a 1.5lb loaf with medium coloured crust and this was perfect - came out lovely and crisp but on 2nd day had softened up but still delicious.
The paddle did get stuck in base of bread but I carefully dug it out leaving only a small flat hole so no problem (I will oil paddle a bit more to try and avoid bread cooking round paddle).
The pizza dough was a little sticky but I just added more flour when I kneaded it before rolling out. Pizza base was lovely and fluffy - delicious!
I'd recommend this bread maker - great value and very quiet!
Burns the bread every time November 29, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Very dissapointing. Bought this to replace a previous Morphy Richards bread machine which had given fantastic service and bread for years. This once burns the bread even on the lightest bake setting. I have sent two back that both do the same. Unless you like very dark and chewy crusts don't buy it. Unless of course I was just very unlucky.
