The Boot-Camp, Tough-Love Book of Healthier Eating July 25, 2006 34 out of 40 found this review helpful
Look, okay, she's on the nuttier side of normal our Gillian, more than a bit aggressive, a mugga mugga sprouts proslytizer, we all know by now she got her PhD online, and that she recommends eating foods that aren't all in the local (though with her growing popularity, more and more of her recommendations are popping up in every market I go to). BUT -- her diets work.
Yep, her plan is tough to follow if you like what has become for us 'normal' food and eating. But so many of us are desperately unhealthy and, quite simply, dying of what we are eating -- so if you want to eat better, shock your system out of its destructive habits, and actually feel better (no matter how many sprouts or smoothies or raw veg you have to eat)... if you are serious about a big turn-around in your eating and health in a relatively short period of time, and a good foundation for the future... this book is for you.
It aint always fun, but when I stick to it, I am better off for it, no matter where she got her "Dr" from. You will be healthier for it, no matter what those darn smoothies taste like!!!

From a qualified dietitian's point of view - it is disappointing that Ms McKeith is still using the title Dr - for which she has been widely critisised by the popular press - her 'PHD' can be bought online, and so as such she has no recognised nutritional qualifications.
However, her approach does seem to get through to many people - Whether the benefits of following her 'diets' are long-term though, is questionable - a weight loss of '3 stone in 8 weeks' is not a healthy weight loss - more than 2 pounds a week is likely to include muscle and water loss, rather than fat.

Give this one a miss. April 9, 2006 68 out of 83 found this review helpful
I followed the 28 day plan and now on day 29 the book is in the bin. Ok, so anyone following any diet should expect to make a deal of sacrifice and give up some of their favorite food but for 28 days I've had no coffee, milk, eggs, bread, red meat, salt, refined flour or rice. Instead I've existed on smoothies, (nice with the exception of the one make from Avocado and fresh figs - my husband threatened to be sick after one sip). The rest of the meals were tasteless at best and totally unpalatable at worst. The Chinese Cabbage soup was somewhat similar to tasteless vegetables in dish water! Other reviewers have mentioned the shopping and difficulties in obtaining ingredients and yes I totally agree. While I did manage to track down most items eventually it took hours of time and lots of dosh. I doubt many working mothers would have the time or funds to do so. I now have a cupboard full of all sorts of dried beans that I'll probably never eat. If it's done me any good then that has been to make me think about what I'm putting in my body but I certainly couldn't carry on with the austerity for another 28 days. I've lost a few pounds but nothing like as much as I feel I should have given the effort it's been.
A great and helpful book. February 27, 2006 17 out of 36 found this review helpful
