A Slice of Ramsay Pie March 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The jacket cover quotes that we think we "know Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell."
And we do know him, this book might be his story but he is all of these things - but that doesn't make him a bad person, in fact it makes him human.
The autobiography doesn't have a time scale theme through it - it flits back from the past, present and also the aspirations into the future. What it does deal with is elements of his life which have shaped him into the man he is today. His dad, a very moving section and as the first chapter of the book, draws you straight into Gordon's mind and emotions. His brother, Ronnie, the infamous one who we all know about from reading the press. Still a huge demon in Gordon's life and one which Gordon is desperately trying to find the right way to deal with. His passion for football, for cooking, for his mum - his passion for succeeding in whatever he turns his hand to is all throughout this autobiography.
It is all here, the highs and lows - the great thing about this book it shows it all warts and all. Elements of it must have been difficult for Gordon to actually put pen to paper. The success of his business and his restaurants the drive for Michelin stars and helping to develop chefs, who have all become his army of workers, (Angela Hartnett, Mark Sargeant) and help make Gordon Ramsay the name known all over the world.
Yes there is the obvious swearing, something which puts me off watching too many of his shows. However, you can read this book without taking much notice of them as all it does is reaffirm his character strength and somewhat frustration with the world.
Well recommended book, if you want to see the man behind the mask - though in my opinion what you see is what you get. There is no mask.

WOW!!!! February 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had no idea what this man had gone through, and I can totally understand why he is the way he is. I personally have always liked Gordon Ramsay and have the most respect for him, and reading this book has not changed that for me. I totally recommend this book.
Moving, engaging and inspiring February 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is a fabulous read on many levels. Gordons childhood was challenging and would have broken a lesser man, but instead he used it to fuel his efforts as a chef and as a result became what he is today.
There were real insights into the restaurant trade that were most enlightening. Meals out will never be the same again.
My life is most definately enriched from reading this book. We in Britian should be most proud of Gordon Ramsay. What an awesome man!
Engrossing life of a true genius January 16, 2008 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
I read Humble Pie as a pre-runner to reading Playing With Fire...I found it totally engrossing. Gordon Ramsay writes from the heart in describing his early difficult childhood with an overbearing, selfish and violent father to his curtailed football career and then to finding a career in the Kitchen almost by accident. Ramsay really earned his stripes in gathering cooking experience, especially in France and via his old Mentor Marco Pierre White and that is why he is the most respected Chef in the world today. The guy is already a culinary genius and his natural persona shines through as a genuine celebrity (even if he hates the concept of 'Celebrity Chef'). The insight into behind the scenes at Hell's Kitchen really shows that he is totally his own man. A must for all Ramsay fans
