My husband and I love to cook, but with two kids and both working full-time, we either end up using convenience foods or not eating until about 9 o'clock if we want to make something tasty - by which time we're falling asleep in our dinner.
I bought this book on the strength of just the first episode of Nigella's series and I was not dissapointed with the other recipes!
I'm not too impressed with the chapters as it doesn't make it particularly easy to search by ingredient or food type but the recipes are quick, easy and tasty.
I made the chilli recipe for all the adult guests at my son's 3rd birthday party and they were all suitably impressed - it's fantastic...but simple!
I wouldn't be without this book now - I even photocopied some of the recipes when I went on a self-catering holiday to Portugal.
A must buy for busy people who love food!
Express Success!! March 16, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a hit! I bought it when I was having guests for the week-end. I wanted to spend more time with my guests than time spent over a hot cooker. It worked, I prepared ahead where I could like Nigella's tip of storing your ready made pancake mix. My guests loved everything I made from the tasty Quesadillas Tortilla wrap Page 240 to the hugely popular Smoked salmon potato cakes page 198. with the exquisite Flourless Choc brownies page 51 and my absolute top favourite of Cherry cheesecake page 81. If I have any critisism, it would have to be the several pounds I piled on over the weekend. You do need to be aware that many of the recipes should carry a high fat warning. Right now, there's just time to make a Mocha choc smoothie whilst the TV adverts are on. Thats what I call an express success!! P.S. Such was it's popularity that two of my friends have since made me order a book for themselves....Is nothing sacred?
Fabulous March 11, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I love this book! I have cooked more of the recipes from this book than I have from any other on my heaving cookery book shelf! From the truly delicious prawn linguine on a work night, to the glittery marshmallow squares for my niece's birthday party, to tasty Mexican scrambled egg on a Sunday morning... fab fab fab! And that's not to mention the coq au riesling and quesadillas, which I have happily cooked for friends. I've recommended this book to family, friends and colleagues, and heartily recommend it to Amazon readers too!
IF YOU ONLY BUY ONE COOK BOOK THIS YEAR, MAKE IT THIS ONE!! March 11, 2008 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of cooking and I'm at my happiest when I am in the kitchen, whizzing up gourmet meals for ten dinner guests. However, I also have a toddler, baby and husband to feed every evening. Not only is time precious, but the food has to be tasty to be accepted!
Cue Nigella Express. I have made dozens of recipes from this book and so far every single one of them has worked, and has been praised and revered by all who have sampled them. The Tiramisu is one of the best I have ever eaten, and it's one of my favourite desserts. The black beans with tuna is to die for, as are the chickpeas with rocket and sherry. I have to admit that my husband and toddler looked at me like I'd gone mad when I presented them with a bowl of chickpeas for dinner. But ten minutes, and two full bellies later, they admitted that it was stunningly good.
Fab, fab, fab is all I can say. Don't even think about not buying it!!!
A Culinary Godsend March 8, 2008 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
I await the latest instalment from Nigella with eager anticipation, and have not been disappointed by this latest offering. I am currently dealing with two faddy children, one husband on a complicated diet and me and an eighteen month old who will eat anything that passes our way. This makes meal times long, complicated and often frustrating. Nigella has saved me from despair with this book.
The recipes are easy, common sense and most importantly tasty. They allow you to cut corners and save time without feeling like a charlatan and a poisoner, and they satisfy most of the faddy eaters in my house. What more can a woman want?
The triple chocolate biscuits are hugely popular with us, particularly because they swell to the size of dinner plates in the oven and are very impressive to small children everywhere. The hokey pokey is brilliant and easy. The cheesecake is fantastic to make with small kids because no cooking is required and they feel like chefs. The curry in a hurry is a firm favourite. In fact, everything I have cooked has gone down a storm and the pages of another one of her books are yet again coated in residue from many afternoons of hard use.
I don't know what I'd do without her frankly. Brilliant.
