I don't agree with northern climes's review February 2, 2004 67 out of 70 found this review helpful
I have bought this book myself and I think it is a really useful book. I have written this review because I think that the review by northern climes is confusing and I am worried that people with diabetes will get the impression that this book is full of sugar and artificial ingredients. IT IS NOT. This book concentrates on using natural ingredients, including dried fruit, and specifically advises against using artificial sweetners, as is consistent with diabetes recommendations.I found the recipes really delicious and welcomed the attitude that there are no 'banned' foods for people with diabetes - sugar and sweet food is allowable as long as you eat sensibly. And the book quite rightly tells you how to do this. Great advice and yum yum yummy recipes.
Do not confuse diabetes with a low sugar diet/intake January 9, 2004 31 out of 75 found this review helpful
I received this book after I got the impression that the chef was going to be using dried fruit and other natural 'sweetners' (as opposed to potentially hazardous artificial chemicals that abound) in his recipes. I was looking forward to a refreshing new look at cooking. This is NOT the case. MANY of the recipes contain added sugar (castor and icing), including some of the main courses (that is, the use is not confined to puddings). While I do of course accept that diabetics on the whole include a proportion of sugar in their diet, the daily monitoring that is necessary is certainly assisted in this book. This review is simply a warning to those that may be under the impression (as I was) that diabetes-cooking-style equates to substantially reduced sugar, because it clearly isn't the case. Of course, if someone can refer me to such a book, that doesn't rely on Nutrasweet or any other artificial sweetner, then I look forward to it. Hope this has helped.
Thank goodness for this book October 29, 2003 42 out of 44 found this review helpful
There are some really gorgeous recipes in here and none of them are too fiddly and difficult. I like the way nutritional breakdowns are given for everything so you really know what you're eating. A godsend for diabetics who are sick of boring food!
